People periodically ask us about how their dog might contribute to society as a therapy dog. Therapy dogs are often helpful in nursing homes or hospitals to lift the spirits of the patients. They also visit schools and libraries. A dog in these situations must have proper manners and temperament. Where to get started?

First, a dog should be certified as a good citizen through the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program. More information can be found at:

Therapy Dogs International (TDI®) is a volunteer organization dedicated to regulating, testing and registration of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers for the purpose of visiting nursing homes, hospitals, other institutions and wherever else therapy dogs are needed. Evaluators will test the dog in question for temperament to see if he or she is eligible. More details on the program can be found at:

CANINE CHRONIC BRONCHITIS
Coughing occasionally is one thing, but fits of coughing month after month is a chronic problem. There are many reasons why a dog might develop an ongoing cough but after ruling out heart disease, tracheal collapse, and other problems, it may turn out that the problem is wear and tear on the airways, leading to a vicious cycle of inflammation. Learn more about this condition on the newest page in The Pet Web Library.
